What is the NJ State Seal of Biliteracy?
A special recognition awarded by The New Jersey Department of Education to celebrate graduating high school students who have successfully demonstrated a high level of proficiency in speaking, reading, listening and writing in one or more World Languages, in addition to English.

As our communities and world become increasingly more global there is an increased demand for our children to be bilingual or multilingual to be well prepared to be successful global citizens.
Bilingualism is not only a desirable skill but a highly sought after skill in the competitive global work force that our students will be entering.
Fostering and promoting bilingualism at SHS helps set our students apart from the pack when applying for college and seeking employment.

How do our students achieve the NJ Seal of Biliteracy?
All juniors and seniors in a World Language class in levels 4 or above sit for an NJDOE approved proficiency assessment. Students must demonstrate a proficiency of Intermediate Mid or above on listening, speaking, reading and writing in the World Language, in addition to meet the State high school graduation requirements for ELA.
