The VALUE of a WORLD LANGUAGE for OUR STUDENTS

Published by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages

What to consider when choosing a World Language?

  1. What are your World Language goals? What is your desired outcome?
  2. How much time can you commit to the study of a World Language?

1. Identify your World Language Goals:

  • To graduate earning the Seal of Biliteracy and be able to speak, read, write and listen at a high level of proficiency.
  • To become a Latin scholar
  • To satisfy the high school graduation requirement

2. How much TIME can you commit to the study of a World Language?

TIME is critical to a student's growth, development and success in the study of a World Language.

As a department OUR GOAL is for students to identify the language they can commit to for FOUR YEARS!

The more time invested the more language you will take with you.

  • One year of World Language - meets graduation requirements
  • Four years promotes higher levels of proficiency
  • Seven years - Those students who continue to develop the language chosen in middle school will benefit the most.
